The American Type Serama
Because the biggest import of Serama from Malaysia was done by Mr. J. Schexnayder, most birds are descendents of this import. There were a few imports by others but the amount of birds was very small.
America has developed the so called American Serama because the Serama from the import consisted of the many different types which are normal in Malaysia. The amount of birds was too small to breed all the different types – there being nine types in Malaysia. Two of the most popular types, the Apple and Slim are blended into the ‘American type’, called thus because this ‘type’ started in America. All Serama are a Malaysian breed whose differences will evolve into a mix until there is one distinct type.
The main imports from Malaysia into the UK were in 2004. Birds were also imported from the United States (Mr J.Schexnayder’s breeding lines). Thus breeders in the UK are working with both the ‘American type’ and the Malaysian Serama.

American Serama versus Malaysian Serama

The SCNA is the only legal organised and recognized national Serama club of North America. The (non profit) SCNA is subjected to the laws of the state of Louisiana and the organisation is established December 1 2003 by the judge. In it’s first year SCNA had 125 members. It functions as a club in America with additional bylaws etc. It has 11 districts each with a representative who is elected by the members of that district. In July 2006 SCNA officially became the Parent Club and Sanctioning Organization for the American Serama to be compared with the PCGB in the UK. The governing body in America is the ABA (American Bantam Organisation, large and bantams are split up into ABA/APA). SCNA is partly based on internet due to the huge distances in America.
