The UK Serama Club, together with all other mentioned organisations have a few goals concerning this fancy breed. The first and most important goal is to promote the Serama to it’s special place within the hobby of poultry breeding in England, Europe and elsewhere.
Focus is on type, vigour, fertility and size. Type is the first and most important thing for which the Serama is bred. Although the Serama is most ‘famous’ for being the smallest chicken breed in the world, and it’s weight (A, B or C class) is very important, it is type by which we recognize in one glance that it is a Serama. A small chicken without the Serama type is not a Serama and should therefore be excluded from breeding.
But, since the Serama spread out over America, size has become very much over exposed by some and type began to lose its direction . That’s a natural reaction because who doesn’t want a chicken that weighs less than 350 grams? Such a miniature version of a chicken becomes very attractive. The proud stance of a majestic chicken that reflects self confidence is what makes a Serama, not just size.
